Labor unions have been the greatest force behind promoting a workforce as diverse as the state of California. Proposition 209 threatens that diversity by replacing equal opportunity programs which provide access to minorities and women with a legal system where prejudice will again be the standard by which people are judged. Proposition 209 wipes out affirmative action, outreach, counseling and recruitment programs for women and people of color in public education, public employment and public contracting. Proposition 209 will also weaken current protections for women against discrimination by state and local governments.
The backers of this deceptive proposition known as the California "Civil Rights" Initiative have a comprehensive agenda that seeks to dismantle the gains made by working class Americans, as well as those made by women and people of color. Return
David M. Rolf, Western Region, Political Director, SEIU, AFL-CIO:
"The labor movement supports equal opportunity affirmative action programs that are effective in promoting a diverse workplace. Women and people of color should have the opportunity to be hired and promoted according to ability not prejudice."
George Becker, International President, United Steelworker of America, AFL-CIO, said in a letter to President Clinton:
"The United Steelworkers of America supports you in your efforts to maintain strong effective affirmative action programs and urges you take a strong stand against all efforts that divide our nation on racial, ethnic, and gender issue." Return
Under Proposition 209 contractors will not have to reach out to the many different businesses they are currently required to contact by law, fewer contracts going out to fewer companies means less jobs for working class Americans. Return
The Campaign is endorsed by a growing number of labor unions and our Board of Directors and Steering Committee include Dolores Huerta of the United Farm Workers, Aleita Huguenin of the California Teachers' Association, and Dean Tipps of SEIU, State of California.
In the Spirit of Equality and Justice We Invite You to Support the No on 209 Campaign. Together -- We Can Defeat this Attempt to Gut Workers' Rights, Civil Rights and Women's Rights. United -- We Can Fight the Right and Thwart Their Latest Attempt to Pit Communities and Neighbors Against Each Other.
OUR VICTORY OVER 209 WILL SEND A MESSAGE TO THOSE WHO WOULD DESTROY THE RIGHTS WE HAVE WORKED HARD TO ACHIEVE. WE WILL NOT BE DIVIDED BY THEIR ATTACKS. Return
